Frequently asked questions

What people ask most

What should I carry in the car in winter?

A blanket, water, something to eat, a torch, a charger, an ice scraper, gloves, chains or winter tyres if you need them, and the tank above half.

Can I keep warm with the oven or a barbecue?

No. Gas ovens, barbecues and braziers indoors can produce carbon monoxide. Only use appliances designed for indoor use and have a carbon monoxide alarm.

How do I stop the pipes freezing?

Insulate exposed pipes, leave a tap trickling on the coldest nights and know where the stopcock is in case one bursts.

What do I do if I get stuck on the road?

Stay in the car, call 112, wrap up warm and run the engine only now and then to warm up, with the exhaust clear of snow and a window open slightly.
